Michigan Vascular Center is proud to introduce the current vascular fellows.

Thomas “Miller” Beazley, MD

Dr. Miller Beazley was born and raised in Tennessee. He obtained his under graduate degree in Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He obtained his medical degree at the University of Tennessee’s Health Science Center College of Medicine, and completed his residency in General Surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. He first became interested in vascular surgery when he saw a carotid endarterectomy as a medical student. Following his chosen career path, Dr. Beazley matched at the Michigan Vascular Center/McLaren Flint program in 2022, with training beginning in August 2023. He will complete his two-year subspecialty training program in Vascular Surgery in July 2025.

Dr. Beazley enjoys hunting, fishing, and anything outdoors.

Matthew Zweerink, MD

Dr. Matthew Zweerink was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. He obtained his under graduate degree in Liberal Arts at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, MO. He obtained his medical degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine and completed his residency in General Surgery at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND. He first became interested in vascular surgery during his second year of residency and has a passion for rural communities.

Following his chosen career path, Dr. Zweerink matched at the Michigan Vascular Center/McLaren Flint program in 2022, with training beginning in August 2023. He will complete his two-year subspecialty training program in Vascular Surgery in July 2025.

Dr. Zweerink enjoys spending time with his wife Victoria and his dog Goose. In his free time he enjoys snowboarding and seeing the world with his family.

Jason Batey, MD

Dr. Jason Batey was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, IL. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from Bradley University in Peoria, IL, and later completed a Master’s in Public Health with a focus on Epidemiology at Loyola University, Chicago, IL. Dr. Batey obtained his medical degree from St. George’s University, Grenada, and completed his General Surgery residency at The Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, OH.

Dr. Batey was drawn to vascular surgery due to the diversity of vascular pathologies and the wide range of procedures available to treat them. He values the immediacy and significance of the positive impact that these treatments have on patients’ quality of life. Additionally, he appreciates the continuity of care provided by the specialty, which fosters the development of long-term relationships with patients. In 2023, Dr. Batey matched into the Michigan Vascular Center/McLaren Flint program, where he began his two-year vascular surgery fellowship in August 2024. He will complete his training in July 2026.

Outside of work, Dr. Batey values time spent with his wife, daughter, and newborn son. He enjoys tackling home improvement projects and woodworking, as well as exploring the outdoors through hiking, photography, and jogging.

Ryan Schmelter, DO

Dr. Ryan Schmelter was born and raised in Addison, IL. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Biology at Loyola University, in Chicago, IL, and he obtained his medical degree at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University. He completed his residency in General Surgery at MercyOne Medical Center, Des Moines, IA. He first became interested in vascular surgery during his residency at MercyOne.

Following his chosen career path, Dr. Schmelter matched at the Michigan Vascular Center/McLaren Flint program in 2023, with training beginning in August 2024. He will complete his two-year subspecialty training program in Vascular Surgery in July 2026.

Dr. Schmelter enjoys traveling, cooking and spending time with his family and dogs.

Caleb R. Birchler, D.O.

Caleb Birchler, DO Michigan Vascular Fellow

Dr. Caleb Birchler was born and raised in Rogersville, MO. He completed his undergraduate degree at Missouri State University, Springfield, MO., and his Medical Degree at the A.T. Still University of Health Sciences Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville, MO. He also completed his General Surgery training at Beaumont Dearborn/Trenton, Trenton, MI.

Dr. Birchler first became interested in vascular surgery during his residency. Following his chosen career path, he matched at the Michigan State University/ Michigan Vascular Center program in 2020, with training beginning in August 2021. He will complete his two-year independent vascular surgery fellowship training program in 2023 and plans to join Evansville Surgical Associates, a private practice in Evansville, IN. 

Dr. Birchler enjoys outdoor activities, exploring new restaurants, and spending time with his wife Chloe and his children, Sawyer, Vivian, Mack, and their dog Millie.

Kimberly A. Corbitt, D.O.

Dr. Kimberly Corbitt was born and raised in Orlando, Florida. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL., and her Medical Degree at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas Campus, Spartanburg, SC. She also completed her General Surgery training at Nuvance Health Danbury Hospital, Danbury, CT. Dr. Corbitt first became interested in vascular surgery during her third year of surgical training on an elective vascular rotation.

Following her chosen career path, she matched at the Michigan State University/ Michigan Vascular Center program in 2020, with training beginning in August 2021. She will complete her two-year independent vascular surgery fellowship in July 2023 and plans to move closer to family and warmer weather in Florida or Texas. 

Dr. Corbitt enjoys playing volleyball, hiking, visiting national parks, participating in water sports, and spending time with her husband, Devlin, and their dog Jack.
