Free Public Vascular Disease Screening Programs

Assess your risk of Stroke, Aneurysm and Peripheral arterial disease (ASAP)

The Michigan Vascular Research Center, a non-profit affiliate of the Michigan Vascular Center (MVC), is pleased to announce a free screening program to identify those at risk for complications of unrecognized peripheral arterial disease (PAD). PAD is often a silent disease process that can place an individual at risk for loss of life or limb. This disease process can affect all of the arteries of the body; and if not identified and treated effectively, can lead to stroke, renal failure, aneurysm rupture, leg pain, limb loss and even death. There are many treatment options available, and often the only treatment needed to protect those with PAD is risk factor modification. If you are found to have PAD, you can discuss this with your physician to determine if further therapy is needed.ASAP Billboard

Screening Consists of Three Diagnostic Tests

Carotid (Neck Arteries) Screening Exam:

This is an ultrasound exam done to determine the amount of plaque build up in the arteries carrying oxygen and blood to the brain. A blockage in these arteries increases your risk of stroke.

Lower Extremity (Leg Arteries) Arterial Screening Exam:

This test is done to determine the percentage of blood flow getting to your legs/feet. Blockage in these arteries decreases that percentage and is called Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD). PVD can lead to leg pain when walking, or if gone untreated, can result in loss of limb.

Aorta (Aneurysm) Screening Exam:

This is an ultrasound exam of the aorta (the large artery in your stomach) to look for a weakened or bulging area of the vessel, this is called an aneurysm. The larger the aneurysm, the higher your risk of rupture.

Patients will receive a copy of their results and those who are found to have a positive test can have a copy sent to their physician for futher evaluation and treatment.

If you are 50 years of age or older with a history of any of the following risk factors: elevated cholesterol, hypertension, coronary artery disease, smoking, renal disease, diabetes or a family history of PAD, please call (810) 720-ASAP (2727) to schedule your confidential free screening and Assess your risk of Stroke, Aneurysm and Peripheral arterial disease.
